Xmas in the Bible

11/03/2008 at 7:14 pm (thoughts)

Did you know that the celebration of Christmas is actually mentioned in the Bible?

“[2] Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
[3] For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
[4] They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.”

Jeremiah 10 (emphasis mine)

Yes, many of our Christian traditions have their roots in paganism. Because of this, many Christians choose not to celebrate the traditional Christian holidays (Christmas and Easter).

I have been pretty interested in the history of our traditions. It’s pretty fascinating stuff! :)

Thank you. I had a discussion on this not too long ago and some folks tend to get very, well, cranky, when you start messing with their frivolity this time of year.
We have been trying to break the ‘christmas’ habit for a handful of years now — I’m convinced we need to stop cold turkey, and my dear husband is still hanging one foot over the fence into the world, trying to rationalize it all together.
We will come together on this, I know, and I do appreciate your concise, to the point note.
