Foggy morning

foggymorningIt was very foggy this morning.

I also learned something new today. Biking on ice is not difficult. Biking on snow is a little more so. Biking on slush, on the other hand, is very difficult.

It’s been just above freezing most of the day. So the roads are a mess.

And what is it with bad driving conditions bringing out the worst in drivers? What is it about slick conditions that apparently makes folks think it’s okay to spin doughnuts and fishtail through curves on crowded roadways? I don’t folks acting this stupid the last times I’ve driven in bad weather. Perhaps I’m paying a bit more attention since their antics have much more potential for doing me real harm.

Snow biking

12/16/2008 at 7:55 pm (bicycle)

So yesterday I learned how to bike on ice.

And last night we received about an inch of snow. So today I learned how to bike on snow.

Funny enough it was harder to ride on the snow than it was on the ice. I suppose it was because the snow is loose stuff while the ice was solid.

One thing I learned real quick was that it was easier to ride in fresh snow than in snow that had been packed down by cars. The little ruts really make it difficult to keep the bicycle pointed in the direction you want it to go.

Ice biking

My greatest concern about being car-free was ice.

Snow I knew I could handle. Ice was another story. I didn’t see how I could possibly bicycle on ice.

So I started researching and I found out that you can purchase studded tires for your bicycle for riding on ice.

But I haven’t gotten around to purchasing any yet, they run about $80 each.

And last night we got plenty of ice. So I was a little nervous.

But I didn’t need to worry at all. The bicycle with its normal tires performed as though it were on dry pavement. If you had blind-folded me and put me on the bike I wouldn’t have been able to tell I was riding on ice.

I was really really surprised.

The most dangerous part about bicycling on ice was all the idiots in motor vehicles tearing around doing doughnuts and fishtailing.
