Camping

09/27/2008 at 7:29 am (fun)

Thursday morning, Noel and I packed our bicycles and headed out to Big Hill Lake for two days of camping.

It’s a good 20 mile trip to the lake from our house. We left at 8:30 in the morning and pulled into our campsite at 12:30 p.m. We also stopped and chatted with a set of friends that live near Cherryvale for about an hour on the way there.

The church that we like to go to, which meets in Oswego (and is too far to go for us right now), was having a camp-out at the lake and we were invited to go. We could not find a vehicle to borrow overnight so we just decided we’d take our bicycles.

It was a really fun trip.

Thursday night one of the families fixed fajitas for supper, then we sang around the campfire before hitting the tents. I guess I should say that “they” sang, since we didn’t know many of the songs they sing and it was too dark to read in a hymnal. But we could at least hum along in harmony with them even if we didn’t know the words. There was one hymn in particular about not worrying about the future and having the present in our hand (or something along those lines) that really spoke to me, I’ll have to ask them the title of that one.

Friday morning we got up and another of the families had fixed breakfast, omelets. And we pretty well just sat around and chatted most of the day.

There was a children’s activity where they had a scavenger-type hunt. Then we were responsible for our dinners that day. Then we chatted some more and then another family fixed what they called “garbage can supper.” They threw all the ingredients into a very large cooking pot (potatoes, carrots, sausage, cabbage, sweet corn on the cob, etc) and cooked it all. Then they laid butcher’s paper on the tables and dumped the food right on the table in front of everyone! It was lots of fun.

Then it was time to come home. And we were sad. We’d both enjoy being closer to that church so that we could be a part of it. The people are really great. And Noel and I both feel really at home with them.

We’re going to have to make camping by bicycle a more regular occurrence.
